Model multiplication and The Commutative Law in multiplication

Learning objectives:
  • Y1: solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher
  • Y2: recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
  • Y2: show that multiplication of 2 numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of 1 number by another cannot
  • Y2: solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts
A whole-class teaching tool.

A great tool to demonstrate that multiplication can be done ina ny order and that division is the inverse of multiplication. Write a multiplication maths story, then press '=' to create an array.
Click on each column of the array and say 'That's time number 1. That's time number 2... etc
Rotate the array to demonstrate that multiplication can be done in any order.

Have fun!
